The Life Story Center was established in 1988 as a unit of the College of Education and Human Development at University of Southern Maine. It was previously known as the Center for the Study of Lives.

The establishment's archives currently hold approximately 400 printed life stories, all of which average 20 pages in length. These accounts have been fully digitized and are now searchable online.

Facilities:
The Center for the Study of Lives is now located in the National Research Center for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes. The Center is headquartered at the Univeristy of Southern Maine. This move puts the Center for the Study of Lives on the radar for all 117 lifelong learning institutes throughout the nation, greatly expanding its scope.
